Sick Pleco, please help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 10 gallon hospital tank. The reason it isn't cycled yet is because I was going to do a no fish cycle but was having a hard time finding ammonia without surfactants. I have two emperors on one of my tanks that I could temporarily spare but wouldn't that be too many gallons per hour for such a small tank? How do you feel about using an ammonia block? This would obviously not be my solution for the hospital tank, but just a temporary fix while my pleco is being treated.

Unless their lying this is what Melafix claims to do: Contains the natural botanical extract from the Tea Tree (Melaleuca), an excellent alternative to resistant strains of bacteria that are unaffected by traditional medications. Treats bacterial infections such as red ulcers, fin and tail rot, cloudy eyes, mouth fungus, and others in as little as 4 days. Also heals open wounds, ulcers, and damaged fins.

I could be wrong but it says bacterial infections. It;s always worked for me when I have had a fish with fin rot.

It does treat fin rot but he's looking pretty bad. I worry that he's at the point where he needs something stronger. A small piece of his tail fin has already rotted and fallen off and he's got quite a bit of redness. Have you had success treating with Melafix in conditions like this?

tetracycline is the best on this situation! you can use it for any kind of fish! also keep water temperature at 85F!

Thanks for all the help everybody. I'm treating him with Maracyn 2 and he seems to be doing better. A large piece of his tail has fallen off but I expected that. His redness is gone but he still has some dead tissue on what's left of his tail. How will I know when he is better? Tomorrow will be his 5th day of treatment with the medication and according to the label, I can do a second 5 day treated if needed, but no more. I'm trying to decide if I should do the 2nd set of treatments. As I said, he looks better, but it's hard to say if he's well enough to go back in the tank.DSCF3989.JPGDSCF3990.JPG

I finished the second treatment today and he looks great. There's no more white spots or dead tissue on his tail fin! He's eating zucchini again, swimming around, and is no longer clamping his fins. Thanks for all the help!
