hey guys i think my 7-8" senegal is constipated? i haven't seen it poop since last friday and it's stomach is big, it's head can't even rest on the bottom.
it was being fed pieces of tilapia 3 times a week. these are the changes i've noticed in it:
- stomach big
- doesn't swim often just sits on bottom (just swims to catch a breath)
- a kind of coughing action
- excess slime coat

he's in a 10 gallon QT, 28-29 C (82-84 F), ammonia - 0, nitrite - 0, nitrate 5 ppm. been there for a month

the weird thing is he still actively eats. i was thinking about doing an epsom salt soaked food thing, but i don't want to put more food into him i'm afraid he might explode. i tried an epsom salt bath yesterday but he didn't poop.

any ideas on what i should do. i've had this guy for 4 years, i'm somewhat attached.

i've been fasting him since monday..

Do you remember what he ate before you fed him tilapia? What kind of substrate do you use in his tank?

Tilapia is easy to digest so it could be something he ate before that...

right now he's in a bare bottom tank. he was originally with gravel (i know....) and that's the reason why i separated him in the first place i thought he maybe ate some gravel. he had a little bump in his belly so i wanted to monitor it. it kinda went away after a while.

in the main tank he was primarily surface feeding for the past 2 years after i figured out they shouldn't be on gravel. other than tilapia he's been eating hikari cichlid staple mini pellets.

but since being in QT he's been on tilapia only.

in picture 4 and 5 you can see some detritus stuck on his underside, and i noticed it's red on the underside. there's also a red line that looks like a cut on his right side but i couldn't get a picture of it.
any help would be appreciated!

Looks like blockage or an air bubble. Does he struggle to get to the surface to breath?

Or does he have a hard time getting back to the bottom?

He's bloated alright, usually caused by intestinal blockage which could lead to internal poisoning, correct me if im wrong.

I'll research for cures when i get home...
