sick senegal bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
k so i just checked on him, and did a water change. i lowered the water a few inches so he wouldn't have to try so hard to catch a breath. i would have gone down to half but my hang on heater doesn't reach down that low. i also added an air stone just in case.

there isn't much change, but its officially a week since i've last seen him pass any solid waste, and i've fasted him since monday.

there's a red patch on his underside and he's sloughing off mainly from his underside and a little bit on his dorsal side.

k well i checked on him again, and saw something dark peeking out of his butt. then he pooped this green poop out! i'm happy that he finally passed SOMETHING, but he has never eaten anything green ever, he's only eaten tilapia and brown cichlid pellets.

i was thinking....could something be up with his gallbladder? the only green thing in him i can think of would be bile...

Thats a good sign :)

I was looking into this but couldn't find anything you didnt know...

Bad news. I forgot to plug in the heater after a water change and he sat at 19 C water for a day. He now has brown things crawling all over his back and head. I'm heading out to get tetra parasite guard or something. Ugh.

doesnt sound good.. try feeding him some thawed frozen peas, some times that helps but my senegal recently died the same way :( chalk it up to being captive bread.

sorry for your loss, how big was your senegal when it passed?

after upping the temp most of the brown things crawling around on him have disappeared. there are a few under his chin and on his pectorals though.

i tried doing the thawed deshelled peas thing. i soaked them in tilapia juices to try to make it more appealing. this was when the water was colder so he wasn't interested in eating it. i'll try again tomorrow.

i bought jungle all in one treatment since i have no idea what's wrong with him. apparently it will kill all my BB but its worth a shot, since he only pooped that green thing 5 days ago.

an hour after the first 2 fizzy tab things were added to the water he had another green poop which was about 1/2" long inside of a clear casing it looked like that trailed off one end. at this point any waste that he can get through is a plus.

hopefully after the 5 day treatment he'll be able to pass whatever is stopping him up.

i bought aquarium salt too, but i'm holding off until after the current meds are done. i don't wanna add too much to the water at once.
