sighting cichlids in the Everglades

I too saw alot of Mayans and tilapia along I75 heading from Sarasota to Miami. Seem to be abundants of them.

One guy said during a 29'F cold snap in Sarasota a few years back, 120,000 Tilapia floated up in a lake in Myakka Park, but hardly put a dent in the Tilapia population.
It was a bit cool for my Floridian friends last week (40's), for me it was a heat wave.

I live in Florida and I can net baby Mayan Cichlids and Tilapia by the hundreds in the Canal behind my house. I've seen like three gar but they are extremely rare near my house. I've also seen huuugggge koi. When I go to the Everglades I see tons of Gar but I have yet to see a Peacock Bass.

I have a few in my tanks but mostly as dithers or feeders. I don't find them to be a very attractive fish. Come down to FL and I'll give you a whole bucket. Lol

Here's a pic of my son and his grandfather fishing a canal off of I-75 in Naples FL. We caught a dozen Myans that day and if we had a cast net we could have brought home lots of juves that were a couple of feet from the edge looking for food. We had no idea at the time that there were cichlids there until we started fishing.

Second pic is another fish, I'm guessing another Uro .

I will be back in May I saw/caught Uros, mariae, buttikoferi, peacocks, oscars, managuense, salvini, plecos, and snakeheads, florida is so easy compared to Central America, south florida is a visit to 3 continents in one, at a fraction of the cost hahaha, I would like to possibly bring back mariae, oscars and sailfin Molly's....last time I brought back some melanistic gambusia..
