Signs of fish keeping fatigue...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I currently have 3 tanks in 2 different places

125 gal at the office
75 gal home
40 gal home

I have a room next to the lobby at the office where i age water, i can do all my tank maintenance in about 30 min (the 125 gal is high tech planted)

at home i have a water aging barrel, that i fill up usually on thurs and i do it over the weekend or Monday night.

I will be building a house in the near future, and i will have a "fish" room in the basement (or under the house, the lot is on a hill) I plan on setting up a large holding tank to age water in and plumb water lines straight to my tanks, changing water will be as easy as turning a few valves.

I have set the hobby down 2 separate times over the last 10 years or so because i was doing w/c with buckets or garden hose siphon and it was to much work. the "python" cuts my w/c time down big time, when maintenance is easy it gets done on a more frequent basis.

my 2 cents

Oddball 3k worth of water?!? Damn:)

Never burnt out... then I have only 3 tanks at the moment... though a fourth may be coming. Not as hardcore as some here. Never had more than 6 and four of those were 20l I got from a house cleanout after a fire. When I have stopped there was always something else... Reptiles mostly. Always wanted the kids to have all kinds of pets. And we have kept alot expect spiders... wife said "Spiders! I am leaving." well I wasn`t watching the kids all the time soooo...:)

I had so many tanks and vivariums it was so crazy keeping up i'm enjoying my break ... My next house will have a large pond and a nice size tank and thats it!
no more stacking using tanks as wall dividers lol i had a work bench for a feeding table and it was full of foods and my freezer full of mice ,rats sea food and no human food (no room)lol..

with all this talk about "fish fatigue" if anyone desides to leave the hobby for awhile....i'll glady take the load off of your shoulders:D , that's what friends are for

I would agree with that as well. It's really hard if you have the drive in this hobby not to overextend yourself thinking you need every fish you think it cool.

A while ago I had 5-6 tanks and even that was too much for me so I cut down and started giving stuff away just to get rid of it.

Keeping fish has to be fun... its so obvious , there were many times where i forgot about that all important line. 2-3 Tanks right now is the magic number for me.

When you find yourself in a petkeeping fatique, then that is a sign that you should look for ways to automate things.

I no how to fix this!! Denitrator!

Over the last couple of years I have gone down from 6 tanks to 3 tanks running at the moment. I just got done moving all the small community fish from the 2 55's into one tank and am using the other 55 for my ball python with lots of hides, branches, and greenery.
I work full time, have a young boy that takes up most of my time.

I once took a loong break. 2-3 yrs. before that i had 2 75g's and a 10g grow-out. I had to re-introduce myself to the hobby. This meant correcting the wrong things that led me to cool off like overstressing and mis-understanding a lot of basic principles. started again with the old 10g (the 75's got broken during the break) and ONE fish. Now I'm back to big tanks.

i enjoy DIY's almost as much as keeping fish. These ideas can help other fishkeepers who are thinking of laying back from the hobby because of the expenses.

I kind of got burnt out a couple years ago, I got rid of 13 tanks and just kept a 90 going, then I upgraded to a 180 and got rid of the 90 and that brought the spark back.

But recently in January my uncle passed away, and he got my into fish keeping, and I just couldn't deal with it so I got rid of my tank and currently have no fish.

I do though have a 9000gl pond and an 800gl tank I take care of now for my aunt. So I still have fish.
