silent killers

Daustin- I get packages of tilapia filet that I portion ot to my bigger carnivores. Theses guys have eaten pellets (Massivore) before, but they seam to really like tilapia though. An interesting note, I have the bigger one housed with my monster bowfin (14"+)...they are best buds!

Also, your substrate might be too dark- these knifes will darken or lighten depending on their substrate I have found.

And thanks all for the kind words!

I know,I know, old thread to be posting on but I've just come across it and that big afer is awesome...The king of knives.

That P. Afer I have is now a strong 15" and rules my 125 (sold the bowfin). It has killed a red texas and now finds my algae magnet a threat and will attack showing its teeth! I have moved out the silver dollars out as they had knife jaw size pieces missing from their tails and jaw shaped markings across their dorsals...

But the true 'king' of knifes are those monster clowns-simply HUGE! My Knife is more like a Arowana for the size of tank I have, fitting comfortably into a 90G for life as far as I can tell...but happy to rule a 125!

man those knifes look awesome i've all ways wanted one of them or a N. notopterus but i've all ways heard that most turn nasty with age and tank mates are a coin toss seeing that beautiful one next to a bichir gives me hope though

Mine seams OK with my bichirs (I have 5) but just these last few days I have seen nipping marks on 2 of the smaller ones.- time will tell if my knife is doing this or they are just ripped from rough swimming around ornaments.

I have my smallest knife with a 11" Oscar and he is holding his own. I can also feed JUST the oscar or knife too. the knife ONLY eats live or tilapia fillets, the oscar ONLY eats pellets. BOTH will breach the water to get to the food though!

Mine will follow my bichirs around-sometimes 'hangin' with them in my centerpiece driftwood. Like it used to with my bowfin.

But last night I noticed that there were bite marks and shredded fins on my Sydontis catfish. This one poor fish needs to be moved to another tank for sure, I have a fat and happy striped Raphael cat that can hang though...I am also thinking that If I add my 9" green sunfish to the tank- the aggression will go towards her and she is strong/agro enough to fight back if provoked - and with her size should be off my knifes bully list... The other option is to add my one eyed 11" Oscar, but he/she does not like the bichirs(picked at them when they were together for a few days).

I have her (grn sunny) in a cold water tank now though @ ~60-65* so acclimation will need to be paid attention to. Friday is water change day- the moves will happen then.
