I know of black diamond but due to my location I can not get any. But a local store sells silica blasting sand. Is this good for the fish and is it easily picked up by filters or moved?? Any other information would be great thanks.

I've never used blasting sand, but I've heard it's very jagged and can cut gills up. I use pool filter sand and I love it.

I haven't used silica but using red garnet which is used in sand blasting... But I have seen people using silica... Never heard any bad.... At sand blast stores you are able to find various sizes... Don't get the fine ones that will give u trouble...
Most of them here use PFS... Which looks great too...

I have used reddish blasting sand .
Was very heavy and fine grained.
I had issues with compaction and some fishes did seem to get wierd skin rashes /injuries upon scraping against it.
I replaced it with a nice 3-4mm rounded black gravel .

the only problem with silica sand is it will suck up in your filter and ruin it because it is so light of a sand. blasting sand you have to make sure there is no glass in the variety you want some have glass in them.

My experience has been the opposite. My pfs is heavy. Even if I get some in the syphon when cleaning, it drops back down.

Have any landscape supply / rock yard places nearby? They usually have a good selection of sand in different mesh sizes.
