Silica blasting sand

Have any landscape supply / rock yard places nearby? They usually have a good selection of sand in different mesh sizes.

Yeah but I was kinda looking for a darker color sand substrate because I have bichirs and I know that really makes their colors pop. Right now I have crushed coral in there and I'm trying to get that out knowing that it increases pH in the tank, from what I heard. But I saw your thread about your 400 gal tank and liked your substrate. What was it Pfs and black sand mixed??

I read somewhere that the black diamond blasting sand was not suitable for aquarium use. Something about the process when they make it. The article only said the black was bad. It is just used for blasting things clean after all. I don't know....i would not use it. Am sticking to pfs.

It's just regular sand sprinkled with some black gravel. Pool filter sand can be the natural brown sand or silica based (whitish gray color). The only requirement is that it's a certain mesh/grain size so it works with the internal of a pool filter. So depending on where you go, your PFS can be brown or white. The nice thing about a well-stocked rock yard is they'll have a huge selection of sands and gravel, all in different colors and sizes. The place I went to has an entire wall with little sample cups of all the sands and gravel they carried. It took me 30min to decide which one to pick.

Going to Lowes/Home Depot/pool stores is a waste of time, and you'll end up paying more too.

Yup it is called as copper slag... although it is inert but with a very high iron content... they are bad for bottom dwellers and plants alike....

Been using the black diamond sand blasting sand for 2 years now. I am very satisfied with it. My geos love to dig pits and dunes in it. I just cleaned the **** of the sand before putting it in the tank.

Dang! I've been waiting for some personal experience on this... U sure no issues and it is not copper slag? Cause that's one thing that has stopped me from buying a bag of it... A 11pound bag would only cost me $10!!! Please share a pic u you could... I am more concerned as I will be using it for ma bichir... Here a pic of the sample I can get...ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1347685577.000937.jpg
