So after reading some posts, I made up my mind to use pool filter sand for my new set up. Then I called a pool supply store to make sure they had some. He said, sure, we've got silica. Now I remember reading somewhere that silica is abrasive on rays...but several of you use it. Please settle this for me. Is pool filter sand really ok for our rays?

I paid a few more bucks for fine gravel... everyone told me silica was safe for my eels...I lost 3 fire eels, an ornate poly, and a royal pleco..never again

Did you lose any of those fish due to abrasions or ensuing infections in the abrasions? what do you think killed them?

I did it in a 55 and used 70-90lbs and it was 4-5" high. So 100 should do. But be prepared for some hardships with sand. I.e vacuming it up, sand in filter, sand getting stirred up etc. Im a gravel man and as i see it substrate is for function not style but it does look ok....

Thanks F1. I think I'm going to try 80lbs first because I only want it an inch or two deep. I've had very fine sand for a while and yes it has its downs but as I understand it, pool filter sand is not as fine and minimizes those problems. Store closed before I got there grrrr.
