Hi, I just bought a used 25 gallon tank, it's in good shape and doesnt leak or anything, but I noticed the silicon in it is black.... isn't all 100% non mildew resist silicon clear?

I really hope its safe, but I dont want a tank full of dead silicon poisoned fish...

If you're worried about it you can cover it up. Use a razor to trim all excess silicone from the inside joints/seams. Clean all the seam areas with white vinegar. Run a thin bead of aquarium silicone sealer at every seam, smoothing the bead to a thin film with your finger as you dispense it. Once all seams have been covered with the new layer, let the tank cure at room temperature for a week. The black silicone will now be separated from your fish and water.

thank you, I may end up doing that, now i'm trying the tank out with a few feeder minnows, if they die, i'll re-do it.

thanks for the tip thats very helpful

It's fine, alot(if not all) new tanks now use black silicone. It should be fine.

Yeah my Oceanic bowfront has black silicon in it. It kind of gives it a "framed" look. I think that aquarium manufacturers consider the fact that dyed meds can stain ordinary clear silicon(?) :)

Ah! This is great news, my concern was, the tank being used, already had clear silicone, and it seemed to have been repaired and re-siliconed, and i didn't know if the store owner just wanted to make a sale, i never really trust those guys. thanks for the advice :)

The tank seems to originally have had clear silicone. the black silicon is over top of the clear stuff. It looks solid black, as in, I cant see through it heheh. is that bad?
