What is the best Silicone to use to build all glass tanks? iv heard alot of talk about GE silicone 1 windows and doors but in another thread someone said its rubbery and soft and good for inside seams but not glueing the actual pieces together cuz it flexes? also what is RTV 108 that i hear about and that NAPA kind of silicone?

Search "silicone" here in the archives, in AquariaCentral and as many other forums as you can. Theres a lot of info and lot of folks have gone down the same road you have.

I hear the RTV 108 is some of the best stuff you can get for aquarium building.

is there really any difference between this or this

Depends on the size of the tank a little...

GE Silicones became a part of Momentive Performance Materials in 2006.

GE Silicone I & II Door & window, most available, make sure it doesn't have bio-seal in it (these shouldn't, but they could change their collective minds in a heartbeat).

GE Silicone 1200 More expensive, but you get what you pay for. Use this for large tanks & skyscraper windows) ...

GE RTV 108 may cause corrosion of certain metals in direct contact.

Permatex IS 808 black

Dow Corning 786 has mildew suppressants.

Dow Coring 732

A few of suggestions:

Have more than enough silicone for the job (you can always return a tube or 2)

If working on big tanks the larger tubes (construction size) are more economical (You'll have to get a new gun too).

If working on full tanks or large tanks get an electric caulking gun (they make a pneumatic one too) you will really appreciate it (better control of the seams and hands don't cramp up).

Hope this helps a little.

Dr Joe
