Silicone sealant sealing plastic and glass, safe or not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you are trying to seal plastic to glass then no not safe, what you could do is make a metal frame for the plastic and assemble that onto the glass, but that sort of stuff should be left to the professionals

Hello; There is not enough information in your post to understand what you are trying to do to give an informed answer.

well, i made a drip plate using a plastic clip board, and im planning to put all four sides with glass so that my drip plate for my Wet/Dry filter wont drip water when the overflow shoots out water to the plastic drip plate.

how come its not safe? by "safe" i mean is it harmful for the fish when the water comes in contact with the glass sealed to plastic drip tray?

no, its not safe because silicone does not bond to plastic properly and the seal will "pop"

The plastic frame on the top and bottom of an aquarium is sealed with silicon and it holds very well

if you want to go ahead with it, then do it, however on the back of most aquarium silicone sealants it states that id does not adhere to certain types of plastics but it is your tank and you can do what you want with it

Hello; I have used silicone to bond plastic coated fiberglass screen material to glass with good results. It may be that the silicone pushed thru the holes in the screen material as much or more than sticking to it, but it held up over time. If it does not stick at first you may try scuffing up the surface of the plastic a bit. The glass and plastic should probably be clean and very dry.

guys, i did it. i boned my plastic drip tray made out of plastic clip board with a glass on all four sides. :D its good, nothing bad happened :D thanks!
