siliconing and such

I know its aquarium safe I'm just unsure if it will hold the pressure of 125 gallons of water and I don't want to risk that. I think I'm going to get rtv 103 or rtv 108. I'd rather not order it online does anyone know if they sell it at home depot or lowes?

One of the many myths surrounding tank making is that new silicone does not stick to old silicone. Provided the old silicone is cleaned thoroughly (I use methylated spirits) you shouldn't have any difficulty with the new silicone not sticking. As stated earlier, remove as much of the old as is practical, clean and apply new silicone.

Hello; First thing is that the GE silicone I should hold for a reseal. My understanding from this thread is you are doing a reseal to stop leaks and are not replacing a pane of glass. This will be a reseal, correct? The GE silicone should hold just fine.

The next thing is that it is the depth of the water that determines the pressure. It is my understanding that the pressure at the bottom of a 12 inch deep tank of ten gallons is the same as that of a 12 inch deep tank of five hundred gallons. The total weight involved will be a lot different of course and a leak is to be avoided.

That said, using the other silicone you named should work for a leak seal just fine as well.

good luck

I am doing a reseal but I took all of the old silicone off and I want something strong holding it together. I picked up some GE silicone 1 and I read the back of it and it says "not for underwater use or aquariums" in he fine print so I'm bringing it back

It says that to protect them from a lawsuit if you screw up the reseal and 125 gallons of water finds its way onto your floor lol. People use GE 1 but you mentioned RTV which is FAR SUPERIOR to GE. Grangers sells RTV in stores but otherwise I don't know of another place that has it on hand.
