Al that kind of food has its uses, not as important as you think they are, BUT take a violent, absolutely non necessary, toll on water quality.

You don't need to feed any of that, nowadays.

i agree that if used improperly or excessivly and care is not taken to ensure all is eaten or removed it can and will take a toll on the water quality. salmon and trouts are great sources of high protien for fast growths and strong colors, but they are very oily and care is needed to clean the water after the feed.

i feel that verioty is key to a heathy fish. pellets will get old to a fish aswell. if you mix the food up it will be more likly to not go on a fast(non spawning behavior induced, witch this aro is to young to be in). i feed alot of high quality floating pellets, but i also feed all of the others i listed. i also add live qt feeders both store bought and wild caught. i feel wild feeders are important because they have food in there system that has nutrients from the base of the food chain we can not replicate. with all these foods i never have water with any ammo, nitrite or nitrate over 20ppm. i do 75% wc every week to two weeks even if it doesnt "need" it. over filtration and live plant both in tank and hydroponics. clean tanks crystal clear water and heathy fish. i have lost fish but NONE to water quality as it was made out to be in the other thread. i have only ever had one mini cycle and water issue in all my years of fish keeping. that one time was because i was out of town and my roommate wanted to " help" and over feed my tank by a whole bag of hikari food sticks.

Kaya,

Tank is 300 usg, filtered by an eheim pro 3 2180 thermo. There is also a 200 usg per hour powerhead in. A second filter will be added in the future when needed.
The only tank mate is a common pleco, but I've got a giant gourami ready to go in.

He used to feed like this, it's quite an old video but you get the point:

Now you really have to encourage him to feed. He normally feeds on muscles but other foods are fed as well, chicken etc. but he really only has been interested in muscles. He maybe will eat one or two muscles a day if you encourage him but you have to wait until he swims past and drop it into his mouth.

Here are a couple of pics, not the best because the lights are out, I'll post a couple more later when the lights come on.

solid.. you aro looks neat.. and tank looks great.. good setup.. just 2 mussels? thats it? i've never tried mussels cos they are pretty hard to come by and i dont live near the coast.. makes me feel like my aros and cats are pigs.. they prob chow down like 6 or 7 tilapia fillets a day.. read through the other posts.. i've tried chicken and lamb once and my aro did take it but then i knew it wouldn't be part of their normal diet.. so stuck to fish.. how does the aro react to the powerhead btw? i feel sometimes its too bothersome for aros cos they are generally from slow flowing waters.. well lets give it a couple more days and see how it goes.. cheers

Low stocking, water changes and gravel vacuum waste every other day, plus a very good if not temperamental filter. A couple of pointers:

Gravel vacuum is only a quick once over not a deep vacuum, gravel plays a good role in the water parameters, lots of good stuff lives in there, if you over do it you'll crash the tank. It does need a good clean every other week but never over do it.

I don't use the ehiem fines filter pad, it's great stuff but clogs up in no time.

Always have a pleco. It sounds silly, but in this case a big one, they are the strangest fish as you hardly ever see them but they will keep your glass spotless, they produce a lot of waste hence the gravel vac. We lost our big oscar a few months back and that tank used to suffer from terrible brown algae on all of the stuff inside(the tank, just catches natural sunlight where it is). So when the new baby oscar went in after a month we put in two tiny L418s, now these you never see, if you looked at the tank you would never know they were there but... the tank has no algae problems now ;-)

Thanks so much for the helpful tips much appreciated!! Great looking fish and tank! I hope all goes well soon!

Yeah, just 2 but he'd easily chump through 4 or 5 when he was younger. I've got some pellets and some dried krill but I'm not going to feed for another couple of days. Don't forget you have much more water and fish than me ;-)

The powerhead has only been added recently just to move the top of the water a bit, with all this non eating bits of food were getting trapped in the plants but he's had no problems with it.

Glad I could help, you should see my giant gouarmi tank, with all the fruit and veg that thing gets through it's always a mess!

Your Aro looks very Buff if not then Fat. Maybe you should get him some friends with huge appetites. Then he will watch his "new" friends eat up all the food and will eat aggressively once more. This has worked for me thus far imho.

Thank you for the input, I have a 19'' giant gourami ready to go in, I just didn't want to with the aro being off the food, plus it could equal in carnage.

Attention. g Gouramis can be very agressive

it'll be ok, but we are very nervous

Been to 3 LFS today looking for hikari, with no joy, bought some carnivore pellets and he's not interested, so I've order some hikari on the net. I'll keep you updated.
