not really red but orange. He's been on krill and market shrimp since he was about 3".

cameras a pile though this is the best I could do.

looks good from here !!!

The color of the scales are very nice! Beautiful fish.

When I first got my silver it was 4" and grey in color. Determined not to get it started on live food I began feeding freeze-dried krill, which it took too right away. For over a year that is all it ate besides a live cricket or cicada. Its fins (dorsal, anal, caudal) turned a very nice orange-red color. Sadly as it has gotten larger the color has faded a bit, since it is too large for krill and now eats pieces of cubed fish (flounder) and market shrimp (shelled). I think the krill improves the color of most fish. Zoos found that flamingos in captivity lost their beautiful color until they added brine shrimp to their diet, something similar seems to be at works here.

BTW there are "blue" or bluish Silvers at a pet store in Boston. I have not seen them but a friend has several times (and again today) and they are now 18" and still highly colored.

I think that the color has to do with the sex of the fish. Had two aros at one time in the same tank one was pink or red i guess and i also had one that had a blueish color to it. The one i had that was pink is the one at the national aquarium in baltimore (thinking that it was female) because it didnt kill the blue male that was with it they were the same size.

Mine has blue barbells and lips and a little in the body, a bunch of red is starting to build up in the tail fins and scales though.
