When talking tank size for a silver arowana the surface area is move important than volume, because the Aro mostly swims at the top 6-8" of the tank. I would still say 18" is minimum depth though. The following is based on the surface area (foot print) of the tank.

In my opinion a 240g 96" x 24" is the minimum for a life take and this would be for a 36" aro. based on that here is the ratio

Length x width divided by 64 = length of the aro

64 is the number of square inches per in of fish

So as follows;

240g 96" x 24" = 2304/64 = 36" aro

180g 72" x 24" = 1728/64 = 27" aro

125g 72" x 18" = 1296/64 = 20" aro

100g 60" x 18" = 1080/64 = 17" aro

75g 48" x 18" = 864/64 = 13.5' aro

55g 48" x 12" = 576/64 = 9" aro

you get the idea, use this ratio for any size tank

Oh and for that 4 foot aro, the ratio works out to be a small lake:WHOA:

the 240, 180, 125 width lengths are full of junk!!! :nilly: , and besides no math calculations is nessesary to give this fish a right size home, this sounds like the 1'' of fish per gallon rule

the width of a tank should be at least the length of the fish :)

PIC MAKE A THREAD BETTER..

As said previously the tank width should be at least the length of the fish. Though there is some debate about this when it comes to silvers because of their flexibility.

Ross, I love the first pic with the cross-backs!

I think your right it does sound to much like the old 1 inch per rule. So you think a tank 3 foot wide would be minimum. Not sure how many gallon a 8' x 3' would be but I would hate to be regreting buying a 240 gallon when my aro get to 3 foot. Ive got some time though my guy is at 11 inches in a 75g right now, but will go into a 125g after Christmas. My wife won't let me set up the 125g because I got to put it where the Damn Xmas tree goes. But by the end of Summer I'll have my basement finished and can kick the kids downstairs, That will give me two empty bedrooms, one will be the fish room and the other will be my office with the monster tank in it.

Man I can't wait.

Ross here some pics although not real good

Nice pic.. yes arowana's do best in wide tank's 3 foot or better

My 24" silver is in a 24" wide tank. I've never seen him use the entire width of the tank. He curls so tightly that he uses about half.
