I believe silvers need to be kept in a tank that has a length at least 3 times the aro's lenght and a width at least equal to the aro. So with that being said, you could keep a silver in your tank until it was 16" long.

Keep in mind that silver aros grow about 1" per month on average, so if you start with a 4" silver you'd be needing a larger tank within a year. Also young aros unger 7-8" seem to have a high mortality rate, though if you are an experienced aquarist and understand water chemistry and acclimation, I don't believe this would be a problem.
