At what point (size/age) are these two aros recommended to purchase? I know the silvers have egg sacs and should never be purchased when they are this young. But at what point do they not have egg sacs anymore?
I guess the question is what is the optimal time to purchase a silver/black arowana and not have to worry about it being too fragile?
Thanks.

I've found that from about 8" and up they're less prone to problems.

6 inches

Yea, I'm on board with 6" also. However some 6" aros still hover around the surface. On the other hand, They grow so darn fast, in 4 weeks you'll have an 8" arowana anyway.

incorrect

6 inch aro's dont hover around the surface

as a matter of fact no "healthy" arowana should hover and stays at the surface, regardless of size, if it hovers it is clearly ill.

a healthy arowana should be an active fish.

:Iagree: And after you have done very thurough research,. As they are still if you haven't noticed very hard for some to keep in their tanks or alive with the care as well... I would rather wait til 10-12" .. Especially if you have no exp...

And also very nice to have a growing tank plan.. and a budget that will allow going bigger and bigger... :)

I read somewhere that you shouldn't use carbon filtering with silver/blacks because it takes out essential minerals/nutrients from the water...is this true?

I dont know about that, but it's not needed, so why spend the money on it?
Just keep it on hand in case of an emergency.
