Adding salt and doing waterchanges will help. You can add a tablespoon of aquarium/rock salt per 10g of water. The white spots may have been nips from other fish. As the water quality gets bad the spots might be growing fungus. This is common if there are nips and the water is dirty.

im running an emporer 280 on a 30 gallon with two air stones and in between water change time. the dat was in a tank with african cichlids that were relentless at the store. is there any way i could treat them to make sure that he doesn't get infected or start growing fungus? i'd hate to lose him, i had to special order him.

here within the next week or two, i will be getting an fx5 for my big tank so i would be running an emporer 400 on it.

what should i do about the flashing? would coppersafe fix that or should i heat it up a bit and add salt? im worried cause i don't like it when fish flash, usually not a good thing.

If you are talking about the silvery looking spots that is normal but I'm sure you are refering to something else. Sorry on a phone right now. Coppersafe is made by mardel. It is for ick, velvet, and other external parasites. Seeing I can't see the spots I can't confirm what you have but the flicking is usually a good sign of external parasites.
Silver datnoids are listed as brackish fish but can do well in full fresh also. So if you wanted to go 1-2 tablespoons per 5 gallons you can but I am not sure how the stress levels may be changing him around like that can be when you go to add him back to the main tank.

Was the day in full fresh when u got it? Double check the water the lfs had it in. Also do a large water change. If you can't get coppersafe look for aquarisol. It's the same thing. I'd say to water change an add some salt. This will remove a lot of waste and potential parasites in the water. Salt will help with parasites and also make the day feel a bit mire comfortable. You can always lessen and stop adding salt later on. good luck bro

thanks man. the spots are the same as last night and i haven't seen him flash/flick. but im getting some coppersafe to be safe and some more salt. i ran out.
