Silver Dollars and pothos roots

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what plant is that buddy? where did you get it, is it widely available, is it cheap, how is the care?

we call it money plant... i pick it off the road.... it's a cheap plant ....

no care involved... i just put the plants above my tank and submerged the roots in the tank....

and it just keeps growing all over the back and side of my tank

will see if i can find a picture on my mobile later

SD's don't school any better than angels do with a group of 6. Once they are comfortable, they spread out into their own territories. They only swim close to each other when they feel threatened like sudden movement outside of the tank or during water changes. IME, they make other fish skittish. Once I removed them, none of my cichlids were skittish anymore, and didn't bolt any time there was sudden movement outside of the tank.

I would stick with the angels over SD's anytime.
Thanks :) Appreciate the insight.

Hi can i get ur help? What rocks did u use, where'd u get the driftwood, what plants r those and how do they float like that
The wood I got at the local fish stores here (it wasn't labelled so I'm afraid I cant help with specific names), the rocks I gathered from outside my place. There is always a lot of construction going on here in Dubai so there is an ample amount of rock available, I just rummage around until I find shapes I like. I collected the sand from one of the beaches here. Just wash everything thoroughly, and boil everything.
The plants are pothos. You can place clippings of the plant stems/nodes in the water (make sure the leaves aren't submerged) and they grow their water roots. If you are taking the plant out of soil cut off the roots as these "soil roots" aren't adapted for water. They need to grow new ones suited to an aquatic environment. You can find out more in depth information on the internet.
I have a light above my pothos to promote growth, and they get some natural light from the windows in the afternoon.

That is interesting. So the SD's don't touch your roots? or do they nibble them sometimes? Do you think it would be alright if I left the roots as is?
Regarding the skittish behavior of SD's, do you find more SDs in a school help and they don't upset your other fish with their behavior? I was thinking of getting a school of 10. But don't want my geos to become skittish.

what i observed... initially when i first planted each stem has only 1 or 2 strands of root long enough to touch the water.... slowly they start to grow firstly downwards then in bunches.... now i noticed they do not extend further, likely because they are already absorbing sufficient nutrients so they start to grow in bunches

i had this for 1 year already

imagine i had only about 6 stalks of the money plant, each about 3 feet long that i lay across the tank and now it is all over my tank except for the front

i even trimmed some to give away and i don't have light specially for the plants

as for the SDs, i have 13 of them and are about 3-4inches. the rest are bigger fishes, arowana 14 inch, kkp/red devil 10 inches x 3, florida gar x 14 inches, indo tiger x 5 7-10 inches

so they don't really intimidate the other fishes

Just added Pothos to my tank with 6 silver dollars a few days ago. The leaves are out of the tank but the roots are in the tank water. So far the silver dollars have left the roots alone. The plant seems to be doing well. But if I submerged the whole plant they would devour it overnight. Keeping an eye on the roots for bit marks. Keep us posted how it works out for you.
