That is way too many cichlids for a 55g, and you will have more problems in the future.

Silver dollars are great tankmates for a GT. I'd get 6.

I agree with this post. I have 2 gold saum, a convict and 6 silver dollars in my 90 gallon. If anyone gets beat up its the convict but for the most part it is very calm in there. The silver dollars have done their job (being dithers) extremely well.

You're recommending six silver dollars for a 55g tank? They get pretty big. Eventually the GT will be enough for the 55g by himself. I'm figuring he's small right now so it looks like there's plenty of space. I had a 10" GT in a 55 gallon and he made it look small. If anything, get some smaller giant danios or something.

Well, of course it will mean good filteration and water changes. I'm talking about common SD that get no bigger then 6''. Maybe 3-4 would be a better number. A 75g or bigger tank would be a better choice.
I personally only keep 6'' cichlids in a 55g.

Sorry, forgot to say they are in a 180 gallon tank

i would not put filament barbs with a gt these barbs grow very slow they have no Agression towards other fish they like to school and at the average price of 12-20 bucks a peace at the size of 2 inch i would not risk it i have 4 and had to move them out of my one tank to my big barb tank with clown, panda, arulius and flying barbs filaments are amazing when larger mine are about 4 inch now

Filament barbs rock. I love'em. They get too big and are too fast swimming and active for a 55g tank imo. They need lots of swimming space....like a 6' tank.

really? they did fine with my GT when he was 6" and i put them in at 2". and they dont grow that slow. all of mine grew quite fast, from 2" to ~3.5" in a matter of a couple of months.

to the OP. if you do get them then get a larger ratio of females to males as the males harassment isnt far off being as relentless as a male guppy. they also do fine in a 4ft but they are very active and a 5/6ft tank would always be better. they would definitely appreciate the extra length.

if you want your fish to school i would get a bigger tank. in a 55 gallon those SD's will most likely just sit there until they are chased.

I had five redhooks in a 75 with a GT and I had to get rid of them before they even reached the size of a full grown SD. A four foot tank is too small for a proper school of SD, IME.
