Are silvers best kept in odd groups or does it really matter? I picked up some 2" silver dollars last weekend, skittish and are rarely seen when close to the tank, but when i saw them feeding this morning a couple were a little tatered on the tail and dorsal fin. i have six of them i love how they school tho.

silver dollars are tetras and like to be in groups

:iagree: if you tank is big enough get a school of 5 of them

Silver dollars aren't really tetras.:) They are part of tetras in a large group, characins although part of the sub-group, Metynnis which are closely related to the Serrasalmidae but their diet are far different.:)

What size tank and whats in there with them?I have 6 and theyre anything but shy or skittish.

I've found when small, silverdollars can be very skiddish. They lose a lot of this when they get some size on them. I have a group that are a good 6" to 7", and they start looking for food anytime someone gets near the tank. I have noticed that when the main lights are off and moonlights are on, they chase and pick on each other for hours sometimes. It's not far fetched to have a pecking order thing going on with a group of them. I haven't seen it with small ones, only adults. They have never done any damage to each other, but I've had large predator fish do damage to them. Likely, you have a larger fish that is shredding fins. :D
