I have kept small groups of both odd and even numbers (3 and 4). According to may experience, it makes little to no difference. True they tend to be skittish when small and/or new to a tank. But once they get used to their surrounding they get so confortable you will rarely see them school anymore! I also think however that different species as well as each SD within a group has a unique personality. For example, there is a med sized red hook at LFS that I swear thinks he's a red devil or something -- this fish will attack any other put in the same tank. Unlike a piuranha, he is not interested in eating but simply being territorial (like a cichlid).
