Just one questions to you guys? Between silver and black which one is more metallic? I'd prefer to keep one that looks shiney and metallic. From what I've heard (dun know if true) blacks are less metallic then silvers.

Can anyone verify?

i think silvers are more metalic but others may disagree thats just my opinion

go with silvers, for sheer size and shinier coloration in comparison to blacks. nevermind the drop-eye, you have to be very lucky to avoid that. if youre going to get south american aros, you should expect a big chance of drop-eye

You're right, silvers are more shiny :grinyes:

I would go for a black because they don't get dropeye ( mine is 22inches and still no dropeye) and they don't get quite so big. I personally think they display more color and are more attractive. I bought mine when it was big ...it was a rescue buy from a lfs who had it in a way too small tank and it's poor fins were ripped up quite badly. It seems it was brought in from a customer who didn't care for it anymore. Mine now lives with a 12-13 inch Id shark and 8-9 inch rtc. I just bought a new 230 gallon for them and it will arrive on the 9th of September. Either way you will make a good choice. Good luck.

I agree if you want a better chance at having the perfect arowana get the black. I have had 2 silvers that had multiple defects like lower jaw protrusion, drop eye, and crooked jaws. my black is around 14"+ and he has no defects at all. Also my black is the most well tempered aro I have had when it comes to tankmates but I think that is just luck. The black is a more sleek fish and doesn't get as bulky which I prefer and personally I like the color of my black better that all 3 silvers I have had.

Thies topics are why I love this site, honest friendly discussion on something that elsewhere would turn to a cat fight.

I'm leaning tward a black aro when I get one next year, if not only because of the heavy inbreeding of silvers.

:iagree: I am thinking of getting a black too, I prefer slim streamed lined looking aros.. with nice moon lighting patrolling the tank.

Be careful with that. My black aro HATES moon lights.
