Has Any MFK aquarist ever bred silver perch. i would like to breed some and sell to my local aquarium trade so the wild population has more of a chance to breed as they are endangered. any way just basic facts. like sexing, enducing spawning and raising young.

im thinking that they would probably have to be bred in outdoor ponds or very large tanks. im not too sure but i think that they have not got any external differences and must be killed before they can be sexed. i think that their spawning is done during a flood to disperse eggs which is how golden perch breed im guessing they would have similar habits.

hmmm. well i have too small perches and they have different markings. they can be bred in ponds but i dont think they would have to. the flood thing is right. and they are injected with hormones but i dont which to go that far

While wild stocks of Silver Perch are endangered, the species is not since they are routinely spawned for aquacuture. Organise a visit to DPI Deception Bay or Bribie Is if you want to see how they are spawned, hatched and raised. Even if you were to breed them, you should not release back into the wild.

Sexing is quite easy but involves canulation. Squeezing a mature male may often express milt which is a slightly easier way.

they would surely have to be bred in numbers due to their intolerance of similar species. although i am not too sure how they act as adults ive only kept them small and they really dont like each other

mine do they share the same cave and swim around and lie on the gravel near each other. i did not intend to realease them. i only intended to sell them/give them away to LFS's because they al use wild caughts.

they really share a cave.. each time i get them they bully one another till one ends up dead. even when they we're only no more than 10 cm. i guess if you have a large tank you could buy a few more to give a better chance of at least a female in with more than one male, you could then try to simulate a flood by letting the water cool somewhat quickly then re-heat it. when i kept rainbow fish this made them breed almost daily.
