Simple question

i dont think most animals fast intentionally. i say most cause bears and other animals hibernate but that's not the same thing as not eating regularly because you have to hunt for your food. When i learned that it was safe to leave your fish un feed while you were on vacation because in the natural environment they could go weeks without eating i realized maybe i shouldnt feed my fish every day 3 times a day. It has improved the water quality for my tank since there's less waste for the filter to deal with and also there are scientific studies that a low calorie diet for a variety of animals including humans can lead to longer life spans. it's very tempting to feed your fish as much as it can eat and to see it grow so large, i mean this forum is MFK. but i think we do this at the stake of our pet's longevity. Its truely to each their own and it's up to everyone to find the balance that's right for them.

very often when aros are moved into new surroundings or get injured from a jump, they will go without food for a few days. not a big deal for large aros.

I kept a silver for four years, started as a3" baby got rid of it at the 2' mark,i dont ever remember it not eating for me.

As I am confused by the original question, hopefully my reply is useful. I have four large(27-30") arowana. I feed stuffed market shrimp every other day as long a they are aggressive feeders, if any seem to lack at feeding time I will expand the duration between feedings. Of coarse they do have the opertunity to eat pellets daily, the 2 blacks eagerly eat pellets, the two silvers do not(this may be DE related). I also substitute silversides, earth worms, crickets, and freeze dried krill on occasion.

Never had an aro fast for more then a week doing this. I have had one silver go a couple months eating very little though.

I base the question on my experience with giant gourami(I know this is completely different fish, but when younger they tend to shut up shop and stop eating for periods of a couple of months at a time after a period of eating everything and result in a spurt of growth).

I'm looking for experienced aro keepers views to their feeding habits in captivity and people own feeding regimes and what there based on. Answers I'm and getting and is appreciated.

IMO taking a day or two off from feeding a week will not hurt a aro over 12". It will greatly improve the quality of the water which will give a larger benifit to the aros life. have fun.
With this info it makes sense, new filter even a fart can block it
