Here's a second version that would eliminate the first tub altogether. Suggestions please!

Any reason that you cannot place the mechanical filtration on top of the bio media? That would eliminate the overflow risk/prevention measure within the first chamber.

No reason at all. Thanks for the suggestion...it will make the project a little easier!

i think that look better, it be really a wet/dry system. about half of it will be submerged

Other than having the drain line shoot into the center of the drip tray it looks good. Centering the pipe will help the water spread over the bio media.

Don't have the egg crate go to the bottom, make a wall 1/3 up the bio-madia and then egg crate up the rest of the way otherwise you have no 'wet' to your W/D .

You can aerate under the media to help oxygenate the water too.

The wet part will be there since water has to cover the pump. If the media goes to the bottom the wet will be there

I've gone with the second version, and used everyone's advice. I think it's going to work out really well.
