simplest, cheapest, wet/dry ever

picked up a hang on the back overflow and going to set up a DIY like this but only with Rubbermaid not a 55gal tank ..
 
Pardon my Noob-ness, but what maintenance do you perform on this filtering system?

Just need to clean the big chunkies out of the top drawer once in a while right?

I'll probably be doing something like this for filtering my future build.

free-
more scrubbies - i dont even remember buying them but there were a bunch in the closet
egg crate - free i had scraps
under gravel/drip tray - free it came with a tank i got 3 years ago
filter floss - free i use it at work

assuming you dont have an extra 55g tank lying around, a big plastic rubbermaid tub is a quick way to make this cheap filter, even cheaper. and you can usually pick them up at the same place as the 3 drawer bin. theyre usually right next to each other.

gotta love ghetto DIY!
 
Quick question, i can never figure out how to match the pump output with the amount of water going into the wet/dy, do you have to remove some water every so often or hows that work
