it's just amazing the difference in agression between the "big bad" oscar and my smaller Jewel cichlid. so for the last few months I've had a problem with my 8" Synodontis Eupterus beating up my other catfish and even my 10" oscar(yeah thats right) in my 90g. so today i figured, instead of getting rid of him, why not try him in my 55g with my smaller SA and CA cichlids. i had 2nd thoughts because of the size of my Synodontis, but i tried it anyway. then the second i put him in, BOOM, my Jewel Cichlid is face to face with the fish 2x bigger then him in shear size and wouldnt back down. The catfish is doing fine now, but i guess theres a reason why The Jewel is the top dog in that tank. :headbang2

haha tell me about it. plus they are much easier on the eyes then your average oscar. (even though i love mine to death).

They're very cool little fish, to be sure. I got 6 last year and threw them out in a 7" deep kiddie pool in the backyard. I brought them in when the temps were hitting low 60's at night. They all made it except for one that was SO good at hiding I didn't know he was still in the pool. When I found him, the temps at night were in the low 50's...just too much for him.

They're breeding like rabbits now, and I plan to throw them back out again when the weather warms up a tad more. The colours of the dominant male and female from being outside are phenomenal.

My whole group, including babies, also survived an overnight power outage in my basement during winter. One of the GFIs tripped, and I didn't realize it until the next morning. All of the heaters and filters went down. I lost all of my angelfish, but not a single Jewelie. Some of the jewelies were breathing so slow I thought for sure they were never going to make it. But, they all did and are great now. Tough little fish in every way...

that's part of the appeal of jewels, they have tons of attitude for such small fish, same can be said of neets for example

titania, do you ever seen black almost bloches of color on your jewels? i see it on mine when he's been hiding for a while or is stressed...

No, mine decolor when they're stressed. They turn sort of an olive green.

Here's a couple of photos of my breeding pair. I had to remove all of the other fish because they were just torturing them. Sorry for the weirdo photos. The tank used to have dividers in it, and it's got horrible lighting.
