Are the black blotches like the one showing up in this photo on its flank? That's a different species than I've got. None of mine exhibit that flank spot.
 
no he has that black spot all the time, he gets darker back near his anal fin when stressed. did you say this may be a different species??

There are several different Jewel species. The most common is bimaculatus (guttatas). They have flank spots and a spot on the caudal peduncle, like yours has.

I believe mine are lifalili. They were sold as "Red Forest Jewels", but both the lifalili and cristatus are sold under that common name.
