thanks for the comments all; i will hopefully continue to update as i get time...in the final pushes for my grad school research right now, so time is dedicated to gar research around the clock...just not to the gars that are currently swimming around in the pics!

thanks! lateral portions of the isthmus are along the edges of the isthmus closer to the gill covers. check out isthmus of a fish on google images (or something similar), and then locate the lateral edge (viewable only on the underside). with gars (and i assume you are comparing spotteds), you would have to take the fish out for close examination - and this can be damaging to the fish if you don't do it properly, therefore generally not recommended - richard and i will post something down the line at least indicating what we are talking about. hope that helps for now--
