Ok, this is a weird one, and it's bugging me. Today, I picked up three bamboo shrimp for my 30 gallon tank, which is right by my bed. I had a headache, so I went to bed early at 10.

About half an hour later, a strange cooing/flute-like sound started up by my head, and I couldn't figure out what it was. I put my ear up against the tank, and it was definitely coming from inside. I unplugged everything, thinking it was equipment, and the cooing didn't stop.

The sound is still going on, and it's never happened before today. It seems like it has to be the shrimp. It's so weird and creepy sounding. Does anyone else who has these things ever hear them make noise? I want to make sure it isn't their "I'm going to go ballistic and kill everything in your tank" sound. I don't know how a bamboo shrimp would kill anything, but nonetheless...

Lulz. Yeah, yeah. I know it's weird. I'm going to try to record it tonight, because it seems they only make the sound at night. Does everybody think I could pick up the sound if I put a mic in a freezer bag and then dipped it in the tank? Safe?

that's freaky
Yeah, tell me about it. At first I was all "my tank is haunted!":nilly: lol.

PS if anyone can tell me how to get the sound on the internets after recording, that would be awesome.

The only thing I've ever had make noise in my tank was a talking catfish.

That's kind of funny you should mention that. I almost bought a rapheal(sp?) catfish instead of the shrimp but decided against it due to potential size and noise. Ironic the shrimp are noisy.

I forgot to mention, but I got a great deal on them. Petco has them for $3 each right now, good compared to $7 each they normally are.

It could be a mating call also do you have a video recorder that would be better idea then upload on youtube or i think the mods have a way to upload on mfk not sure.

My camera does video, I just don't know if the microphone on it is sensitive enough to pick up the sound.... also I can't find the charger for the battery. But my computer mic is usb, and pretty sensitive, so I thought it would be a better bet. I've been searching for it all week, the charger that is.

I doubt it was the bamboo. I used to have bamboos and they were nervous shrimps. It it saw me, it would hide. I figured if it was the shrimp, the moment it felt the vibration of you unplugging equipment and turning them off, it would stop.

What else is in the tank besides the shrimp?

I had driftwood in a previous tank that released a stream of micro-bubbles for about a day and half and it made a noise like your ears were ringing.
