Mystery solved.
You guys are going to laugh, but I figured out what the sound was. I realized the shrimp didn't "make" the sound all the time, only at night, and only on certain nights. So, I've been staying up a little later than usual and listening. Last night, when I went to get a drink, I noticed the hamster was running in his brand new wheel in my brothers' room. The sound was suspiciously similar to the shrimps' "singing," just less muffled.
I went to listen at the tank, and sure enough, the shrimp were singing again. But, it would stop when the hamster left his wheel. The hamster is in a glass cage against the back wall of the apartment, the tank the shrimp are in is also against that wall. My guess is the sound was traveling along the wall somehow and then being amplified by the water. Pretty neat, right?
