About to get another 40 breeder and really want to try the single fish route. Was thinking about ebjd but scared it might be too big. Other suggestions?

Go ahead with the EBJD. Due to their inbreeding it'll be unlikely to grow all that big let alone live past 4". Keep the water pristine and you have a shot. Due to their popularity they seem pretty cheap now. The one I had was really interactive and fun to keep till his genes got the better of him, made it to 3.5" and just went to pot. They grow really quick to 3"+ too. If for some reason you get super lucky (like powerball jackpot lucky) and get one that has great genes still you can either upgrade the tank or sell him off. A 6"+ EBJD is worth some cash and start over. This may sound cold, but they are short lived for the most part anyway and there seems to be no stopping the availability of fry.

That's not very reassuring lol. I have read about them and knew they were a weak fish but I didn't know it was that bad. Also figured it would be good to hear a couple of opinions especially since everywhere I look it says fish can go in tanks I don't agree with.

Ehh, this would be the only post I've seen in awhile that made sense to stocking level. Light stocking a 40 breeder for a solo EBJD makes tons of sense to me. They are a great looking fish just prepare yourself to replace it every 4-6 months unless all the gods of luck kiss your forehead. Since people are going to keep breeding them with 0 conscience it won't hurt to give one the best chance possible to live.

He speaks the truth, they're a nightmare. Such a beautiful fish but I've never been able to grow one up

Well I guess I'm on the hunt for one or two since they won't get too huge in that time frame. Haven't seen any locally yet.

Appistogramma harem with some low light plants would look good. My LFS has a huge male (4"+) orange flash with 3 females that he breeds with in rotation.

Great suggestion but he wants a solo fish in the 40b.
