they get too big...?

they can yeah....it just depends. I've heard everything from 6-10" max growth. females generally stay around 6". If it gets too big you may have to upgrade tanks.

salvinis are hideous I really don't see why every thinks there so agro my girl friend used to have three and they where some of the best tempered cichlids I've owned go with some shellies but if u really only want one get a type of zebra/electric blue johanni somethin like that I can't really think of a personable smaller cichlid but those are colorful by the way it's not the salvinis colors but the shape IMO I'm sure everyone gonna knock me for sayin salvinis are peaceful so just save ur typing

Gotta love punctuation!

....

Anyway, I'd say even if the Salvini gets 7-8" in a year or two, if it's a solo fish, and you are religious about water changes, it should still work out alright... IMO of course. 7-8" is definately pushing it to the max, though.

yeah they normally suggest larger tanks for salvini's because they're extremely territorial, not necessarily because of their size, but if he's solo its all his territory.

Honestly though. For a display tank in the living room I would go planted with a small colony of kribs, blue or BR rams, or apistos. Jewels are awful pretty too.
