single fish for a 180

I got him in May of '13 around 6ins. A rescue, he was in a filthy 75 with a bigger male. Obviously that wasnt working well. Felt bad for leaving the other fella behind, but couldnt house 2 at that time. I kept him in a 90 for a couple months, got him back up to speed and on a better diet. He was then moved to a 125. He has been in his new 180 for about 9 weeks. I run 11 tanks from 55 to 265g. My 265 is a community, a 180 houses an adult Oscar pair. All other tanks house single fish. Besides Jag, I have Dovii, Festae, RTM, JD, RedTex, Midevil and 2 other large Oscars. I prefer single large fish in adequate tanks.

Indeed.. fish living stress free, with lotsa room and good water change sched do very well.

How long have you had it and don't BS. Jags are cool fish and a lone wet pet in one tank is fine. However, If it's your only tank and you see tons pics of species after species here on MFK the decision to keep one fish if it's your only big tank it will come back and bite you.

Most of the species mentioned(Jags, Dovii, Umbee, etdc) can & will most likely dominate an entire 180GL....even a tank of that size is a drop in the bucket when dealing w/ CA genus like Parachromis as they are very territorial & aggressive. The tendency to overstock FW tanks is most definitely not the proper way to go when you wish to keep certain CA species. THAT will be the thing that "will come back & bite you".....when you get shredded/maimed/dead fish.

Male dovii/umbii will be short term like 3-5yrs. If you can't get a bare minimum 240 id leave those alone. Ive seen a 22" male dovii in a 180 & it looked cramped not to mention you couldn't get within 5ft of the tank without it tearing everything apart.

If you go male jag id get a group & keep the most interactive one. My current male is right at 13" & is entertaining to watch but extremely jumpy with people

A amphilophus chancho might be kept in a 180 but they get pretty big.

I definitely concur......I know a guy who built a 8ft 300GL plywood tank, just for his male Umbee......& it makes that tank look small.

Another vote for male Jags, I sold my tanks and my 14 inches Jag when I moved from NJ to CA. I'm currently raising another Jag and hoping its a male one since it's a dominant one in a group.
