I have never heard of that happening. As they get bigger the size of fish they are able to eat in comparison to their body size reduces. Usually when they are older they will be fine with fish half their size(that is if the tankmate is high bodied, if the tankmate is long and slender I would up that to 3/4 of the perches total body lenght.)

how big a fish can they take at 12-13"?

I would say they can eat a 10" ATF, or an 8" peacock bass...to name a few. This perch has a very large mouth. BIG! And they can shove massive amounts of food inside.

I would say that would be about right. They have the capability eat fish this big, but if it was well fed there is a chance that it won't go after something that big( also feeding dead foods will help). Some people will say its not worth the risk, especially if it has expensive tanks mates.
