How long does it take for wood to sink?

It actually depends on the type of tree it came from, certain dense, heavy wood species sink quickly, many of the tradition tropical woods do this.
If however it is from some less dense light species, it can take years to become water logged enough to stay down.

What you have looks light and dried out which would take forever. The dense wood I found at the river still halfway float after 6months
Not sure what the wood is but it doesn’t feel too soft when you try to dig into it. It was standing dead in my woods. I just pushed them over and cut them up. I pressure washed it then soaked it for 48 hours in 
a 55 gallon drum with a couple gallons of bleach. Pressure washed again then started soaking in fresh water. It’s been two weeks and it’s becoming less buoyant but not sure what to expect.
Oh well, if it doesn’t work I don’t have a dime invested.

Thats what I would do. I zip tie it to slate then cover with sand
I agree, that once the wood is waterlogged, it will look great in your tank. What I noticed most about your thread really wasn't the wood, it was your extremely clean garage. Viewing made me realize how lazy I've been regarding spring cleaning. I guess I'll be pushing a broom & hauling trash in the very near future. Lol. Good luck with your project.
