Six Degrees Could Change the World

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, it has happened before, but due to natural causes. The Earth's prior spikes in green house gases came from apocolyptic-size volcanos, comets leaking carbon dioxide, etc. The "recent" shift from ice ages to warmer ages is due to the earth's orbit and the gravitational pull of other large actors in our solar system. But, this climate change is extremely accelerated because of OUR actions. Thats the difference. I for one am optomistic, as people are growing aware of this across the world and are beginning to unite to do something about it.

I have to disagree optimisim, Europe the U.S. and other "western" countries have changed a bit for the greener, but the rest of the world is FAR behind. Sadly the other part of the world happens to be the majority. A small percentage of 350million Americans changing their "green" habits is nothing compared to the opposite effect nearly 3 BILLION people in India and China are doing. With their arrival into the modern 21st century and economies that are doing great allowing the people to have more...those carbon credits you bought were pointless...

I'm an environmental systems minor in university and I have to agree with everyone here. All our efforts to be green especially the leadership of EU are offset by the billions of people in the third world. There is also the natural cycles of the earth. Human acceleration is the key.

Anyone can also argue that the different climactic models can be null but the truth is there are some truth in them. Critics of the climactic models have stable arguments for their criticisms. Its ironic to think that humans of present are best off now than we have been in history but we are also affecting natural processes that we frankly do not accurately know how badly it will affect us.

Well, if you don't know, just ask Al Gore, he'll tell you.

I don't think we should discount the earth's ability to heal itself. The coral reefs at the Bikini Atoll Atomic test sites are thriving again after many scientists said that they would never grow back.

"Coral is again flourishing in the crater left by the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated by the United States, 54 years after the blast on Bikini Atoll, marine scientists reported Tuesday."...
"The 15 megaton hydrogen bomb was 1,000 times more powerful than the blast that destroyed Hiroshima, vaporizing islands with temperatures hitting 99,000 degres Fahrenheit, and shaking islands up to 120 miles away.
The resulting 4 mile-wide fireball left a crater 1 mile wide and 80 yards deep, while the mushroom cloud rose 62 miles over the South Pacific and radioactive fallout reached Australia and Japan."

Both quotes from: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24132798/

This does not solve our problems, but I still say don't underestimate the earth.

I wonder what 99,000 degrees F shots do to our atomosphere. It seems to me that all the atomic tests that countries did over the years would do a lot of damage.
