The colour could have more to do with the sunlight than anything else. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, but a fish is going to grow faster in ~1000g of water that in 55g....

especially with food on hand at all times. Pond and aquarium kept fish will almost always grow at different rates. Ive never fed my bichirs live fish but massivore and silversides seem to really put the size on them.David R;3380707; said:
Probably a lot less stress in a large pond compared to a 55 gallon tank. That could make a big difference in appetite.
