same thing happened to my 12" vittatus that I sold. next day in new owner's tank it got startled and rammed itself into the tank and died.

I keep mine at way smaller tanks atm. They don't do well in very big tanks while still small ime. They tend to eat more in a relatively smaller tank. What matters is the water flow. Power heads/wave makers. Also, some are skittish and some are not so skittish.

Honestly, i don't think a river monster size gatf would ever be seen from a home aquarium (unless wc). And a fish that size in the wild would probably be very old considering how slow they grow.

I think they are quite easy to keep as long as u got good water, enough flow and food and ample space relative to the size. With regard to them being skittish, they would more likely be but some are not as bad. Tankmates may outgrow them or be killed by them. But at the right size they may be communed.

This is the most accurate information so far in this thread...

Ironically, that vittatus went in a 300 gal, while a few years later, I grew a group of ATF range from 10"-14" in a much smaller tank without such incident. Care to guess the size of the tank?

80 breeder or equivalent +/- cube shape tank?
You're good! You get quite close. 60gal - 36x24x18. I started with 45 when they were 3" in a breeder 60gal - 48x15x17, down to 38 when they're 6"-7", when I transfered them to that 60gal. I split the group of 30-32 into two of those 36x24x18 when they're 10"-12". I have a Hydor Korallia 3 powerhead on one side of the tank to blow water. The current helps them to realize there's wall on each side
