I'm no an expert here, but my JD's were approx 1 yr when they bred. At the time the female was pretty small. Maybe a little larger than 3 inches. The male was approx 4-5inches.
That's interesting information. My pair is about 3.5 inches long and I thought I would have to wait until they are at least 6 inches. Currently I am keeping them separated, but maybe I should start a try!
I should have used something to guage size, but here is a camera photo of my Dempseys. The male being the larger of the two. The tank is a 110 Oceanic Bullet. But as you can tell they are not the biggest Dempseys out there, and these have spawn 5 times already.
I had a pair breed in a 180g community tank 3 weeks ago. The male was about 4" and the female 3". There were about a dozen young red hooks and 4 other similar sized dempseys in the tank with them. Since they bred on piece of bogwood I removed the wood and put it in a 10g tank and the babies hatched there.
I have had some females breed at 2inches. It all varies, but on average, 3-4inches, they start to breed. Please be reminded that breeding at that size may stunt their size a bit, hence slower growth.
Thanks...I don't believe they are true albino's. My Adults are turning more Yellowish with some Blue and Red at the top of the fins. The Dorsal fins also have a blueish hue to them. But...There is some Brown in them that seems to be dissapearing as they grow older.
I read somewhere that these fish were Xanthic. Not sure though. To be honest, since i have had them more than a year now, not too many people have a lot of information on them. Some of my LFS that have been around for years never even heard of them.
I have now paired off 2 sets with some of the babies I raised up...Both are Male Blue and a Female Pink/Yellow/Gold whatever you want to call them. Not so sure if it will be successful, as I hjave heard that many people had problems with thier Blues being sterile/infertile I'll post up some pics of my project tonight.
Has anyone here successfully bred EBJD's with Pinks/Golds or whatever. Or has anyone Bred them with other Blues? I know that they have been bred in the past with Regular Dempseys. Just don't know if the Blue/Blue experiment has worked yet.
