Most people who have grown these fish know that once they hit 6" you almost start to think that your rhom has stopped growing. They can grow extremely slowly after that length. Most will say 1" per year. Some higher and some lower. I've heard of some keepers getting .25" in a year while trying to do everything correctly in terms of maintence and feeding. At the same time there was a keeper on Fury that made over 9" in less then two years (which is extremely impressive).
A 55 gallon works well for growing a rhom out to 7"-8", which will take a good chunk of time, but how long it will be depends.
However its not suitable for ever. And I'm not getting into what is because I disaggree with most on that.
Serrasalmus Sanchezi is very cool looking speciemen (especially purple varient) and would be fine in the 55 for its life.
