Hey guys -

I bought a 1.5 ~ 2 inch thinbar dat around half a month ago and put him into my 30 gallon tank, which, from what I hear about dat growth rates will be ok for a while. In any case, I was just wondering at what point I should start trying to get it off feeders. I know how to do it (assuming that what holds for a clown knife holds for a dat), just wondering what a "safe" size to start doing it would be. Thanks for any help you guys could provide.

as soon as possible, start feeding him bloodworms

Agree with the above. You want to get them off as soon as you can.

The only time I would recommend keeping them on feeders is if they are already use to feeders AND when you bought them they look sickly/skinny. In that case you wont want to risk making them weaker.

As long as yours are looking good, then start throwing in those blood worms:D

I got a bunch of 2 inch indos probably about 2 months ago and they were all eating bloodworms as soon as they went into the tank. So ASAP!

i have not fed my 2.5" IT a single feeder, granted there were 8 danios in the tank before he went in and now there are none those were not my intentions for them :D mine loves freeze dried krill, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen blood worms. i've even seen him take a few shrimp pellets. if they're hungry, they'll eat it

is there a preference for using bloodworms or brine shrimp? Also, how do I feed it to him if he just hides in a house all day and darts out to eat the ghost shrimp / tetras when they swim by?

I use the large blood worms krill earthworms only use feeders to stabilize . I lost a tank full of fish to a few feeders its not worth it.

Personally I have found that my Dats like blood worms more then brine shrimp, but will eat both.

Just throw them in the tank so they sink around the hiding spot and he'll know its there.

You can also do stuff to help insure they know food is coming by training them.
Turn off your filters before feeding, or tap the lid of the tank a couple times before you throw the food in. After some time they will start to take these as signs food is coming and will poke out of there hiding spot when you do them.

My dats are fed -

blood worms
brine shrimp
mysis shrimp
krill
market shrimp
shrimp pellets
silver sides
and I use to feed beef heart also, but found that it was way to messy.
