I'm sure this is a dumb question and probably common knowledge for most of ya but I just wanted to check. What realistically is the difference between skates and rays? On that note is one better for the home aquaria? Thanks for the clarification guys

If I remember right the skates have modified pelvic fins by the tail there and from the ones I have seen they are not as attractive looking. I don't see why they could'nt be kept though. Check out their shape also.

Yes - Skates tend to have modified pelvic fins. They also tend to have shorter, but thicker tails compared to rays.

Also yes - it is very possible to keep skates in captivity - just as it is to keep rays in captivity.
