Skim the top or draw from the bottom? Freshwater tank.

On Amazon, the 425 GPH and 1300 GPH powerheads are the same price... what sizes would you use for a 75 gallon tank, with several large driftwood pieces sitting on the bottom?

PS - @cjbarth & @Jc1119 - I'd love to know what kind of fish you're using for your avatars. Very nice!

wow i am new here and just been searching for filter ideas for my new 6x3x2 and i am very impressed with this idea as i wanted my filtration to be mostly in a sump but some how draw from the bottom as well. your idea is perfet and so simple love it:headbang2

Been thinking about building a sump for my 150 gallon.... I currently use a Fluval canister which has worked great for the last 3 years or so, but my GG produces so much waste it is difficult to keep up with the filter changes, and I figure a sump would be easier to maintain with easier access to the filtering media. Thinking about adding the sump to the canister and running both. Anyone done this and does it work well? I'd be building the sump out of either my extra 29 gallon tank or moving the residents of my 10 gallon into the 29 and building the sump from the 10. Never built a sump before so I don't know if there is a certain size you want to shoot for per gallon or what. Will post pics of my setup as soon as I can get back into my ex's house to take them. I'll be moving it to my new place as soon as I clear out the space I need for it, so I figured this might be a good time to change the setup if I'm going to do it....

I built a temp sump out of a large Tupperware container. I just got the elbows that I needed to complete the setup. I got an eshopps overflow box, which has two hoses that will drain into each of 100 micron prefilter bags. After that I have a pump pushing the water that drops into the sump through two inline filters: mechanical 5 micron filter and chemical. The clean water ends up in a small plastic waste basket. I push the hose to the bottom of that container, which I placed into the sump. I figure that I can dump a few gallons of Pond Matrix or Denitrate into that and then place a pump on top of the bio media to move the water back into the tank. I suppose I could get some kind of container to put the bio media in and just link that to the tank and I would need only 1 pump then. I don't know what to use for that yet.

All I know is that my fish are messy and prefiltering with a sump is going to make life a LOT better. I just wish I would have thought of my most recent idea before I bought the $100 mech filter... I'm thinking of putting a reducer bushing into a cap, making a custom gasket to place between it and the side of a pleated big blue filter. Then I'll run 1/2" pipe from that bushing, through the middle of the filter, to another bushing on the other end. The pipe will have holes in the middle for water to flow into it after passing through the pleats. Make two of those and connect with a 1/2" x 1/2" x 1" Tee and then connect that Tee to my pump. Awesomely cheap mech filter!! My only problem right now is that I want one of the bushings to connect via threads, so that the filters can be easily removed and replaced. All other parts would be solvent welded. I haven't put much thought into it, but it's Saturday morning here in the US, so maybe I'll get something done today.

It seems like this setup would just fill the tube up to the tee from the top overflow and nothing would come up from the bottom?? Once the pipe filled up from the top then the water would just sit in pipe from tee down to bottom.
