skimless multi-level overflow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm pretty sure "the water just drained onto the floor" was tongue in cheek. gotta have at least a little sense of humor around here. I kinda like this idea, if you build it I'll be interested in seeing how the flow divides between each of three holes.

seems like the horizontal pipe along with the one to the sump should be bigger than bulkheads / ok i see u mentioned that good desigh

I replicated your design exactly as you have it drawn, and it did not work. The water simply drained onto the floor. However, I plan to improve upon your design by directing the vertical pipe to a sump.

@OP looks good, can't wait to see it in action

This is mine. The two 1.5 inch bulkheads are about mid level and they flow up the back of the tank and spill over into a 2" line and then back down to my sump. I also have an over flow at one end of the tank to skim the surface water.

Your tanks have all the goodies.

Yeah, it's fun for me. Setting all three of the overflows up to be exactly the same level was challenging. You would think it would be simple, just measure them all out and make sure the tank is level but that was just the start! The overflows at mid level flow a lot less than the overflow skimmer at the surface. Then I noticed, dumb on my part, that flowing two 1.5 inch lines into another 1.5 inch line really restricted flow. duh. So I modified this after the picture above was taken so now the 1.5" lines flow into a 2" T fitting and that continues the 2" line to the sump. Of course that modification drops the level of the water slightly impacting the skimmer at the surface. :nilly:

Now I'm happy, I maximized the drain capacity with three 1.5 inch holes in the tank and no check valves in the system at all. Plus I'm getting the combination of surface skimming and lower level filtration :headbang2

So the amount of flow out the bulkheads are limited by the water pressure? What if I wanted to increase that flow for better vacuum cleaning?

I don't think it's possible? Might have to refer this question to Chompers.
