Skittish Cichlids? 'Freaking Out'

Hey guys,

Over the last few days my Cichlids have been on and off 'freaking' out whenever anyone goes near the tank. As soon as they see any movement they will stop moving, and if I move closer they will dart rapidly around the back of the tank, sometimes ramming into the glass or rocks like they're incredibly scared.

Nothing in my tank has changed, other than I've replaced the lids (Which I don't want to take off now as these 'freakouts' could cause a fish to jump out of the tank), and I've stopped dosing Seachem Flourish Excel. It started occuring about an hour after I fed them some Blackworms a couple of days ago, is this a possible cause? Needless to say I haven't fed them those since. When they realize I'm at the tank to feed them they'll come up to me and eat and act perfectly normal (sand sifting, tiny bouts of aggression, the usual) whenever I'm not around.

On the first day it occured I did a 30% waterchange in case there happened to have been any nasties introduced to the tank but the fish are healthy and behavior is fine, they're just freaking out when there's a figure standing in front of the tank or theres any movement. This bothers me because a) they've never been like that, in fact they usually follow my arm around during water changes and beg for food whenever they see me, and b) I'm a photographer and they're my main subject.

Their behavior almost indicates to me that they've been absolutely shocked by something and they're worried it's going to happen again. I can't say anything unusual has happened near the tank other than it being rather window the last few days and the curtains were moving in front of the tank until I closed my window. They seem to slowly be getting better but it's still a worry.

Anyone else had experience with this? Plan of attack? Wondering if I should try something new to try and settle them down or just let it all get back to normal naturally over time, with minimal movement in front of the tank unless needed?

sound slike my tems atm, for sum reason they have weeks where there fine then suddenly there skittish for a while...i'm guessing in both our cases they'll grow out of it dude, what kinda lighting ya got in ur tank?? bright/dull? lots of decor? havent had any mates over tappin on the tank?? i had mates over not long ago and this dude kept flicking the glass and makin them go mental..(i fixed him)..

keep us posted man, hopefully they grow out of it..

28" high tank, 4x54W T5HO Reflector, so it's plenty of lighting, but low if you look at it from a planted tank perspective (not a planted tank).

No one tapping on the glass at all. Tank is full of driftwood and river rocks, plenty of hiding places. I'm sure (or hope at least) they'll get better over time but I'm just looking for a possible cause so it doesn't happen again. I'm almost worried the fish might hurt themselves as the speed they fly around the back of the tank is bit worrying, larger Severum already has some scuff marks from Day 1.

Nitrates? I know s/a and c/a can get flighty/scared if the nitrates are too high. Do you have a test kit? Am wondering if some of the blackworms weren't eaten (got into the sand/gravel or decorations) and then died?

I doubt you need dithers if they were active beforehand. This is obviously something new. If it were me, I'd try another, larger water change. Can't think of anything else.

Heater not cracked? They can leak nasty stuff if have a small one.

I'll do a 50% change and check the heater now as well as doing doing a full parameter test, but I honestly doubt it's any of these as the fish are 100% fine when I'm not near the tank.

Big water change can't hurt, that's for sure. I keep Nitrates under 10ppm at all times so if they're strangely high I might clean out all the decor.

Edit:

Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 6-7ppm
pH: 7.0-7.1 (Normal)

Update: Due to algae problem, figured while I was at it I would remove all decor and give it a boil/scrub.

Half way through, water levels at 50% and o decor in tank; fish seem quite normal, not panicking at all and following around the gravel-vac like normal, picking at sand that gets sucked and replaced by it. Will be doing a redesign that's much more friendly to clean and means fish can't hide infinitely if they want to (I have 3 SAE's in my tank to try and combat this algae and I properly never saw them, they were all under a rock in the back corner).

Will keep you posted on how they settle back down.

I did a vacuum/aquarium rearrangement about two months ago. my RD hid in a cave anytime I was near since, I thought I permenately scared him. then last week, I rearranged/vacuumed the aquarium again, and now he's perfectly normal. I don't know, probably doesn't help you any. but I had a similar problem and it seemed to work itself out (vacuuming/rearranging decor seemed to be the cause and the cure to the problem, though).

Couple of hours after I've finished and the fish are still reasonably skittish but definitely not at the freak out levels like they were before. Quite happy with the redesign too I might add, I'll get some photos later as the tank is still quite cloudy as I did a huge vacuum and turned all the sand over.

I'm confident that it's a.. er.. confidence issue. I'm taking a bit of a stab in the dark but I think that such a windy day causing the curtains to constantly blow against the tank and bump it set it off. Now whenever they see movement it scares them, but when they realize it's me (arm in tank, holding Red Hikari bag...) they realize and don't seem to mind. I'll update this thread in a few days to let you know how they're going.

thats good then, I always hate fish hiding, pics!

I'll post some tomorrow, lights are out and I'm not overly keen on waking them up for some photos when the whole threads about them being skittish and easily spooked at the moment ;)
