Would you guys say its safe to go ahead with slate in the tank?

Yeah. If it hasn't built up very much yet than it probably won't ever.

Actually, if you had a planted tank, a rusting piece of slate would be an easy way out of fertilizing with iron, as long as it isn't too excessive.

For what it's worth at one time all aquariums were built with slate bottoms. I've never seen slate rust.

Now that the slate is done -
I thought i would share with you the custom sump that I'm working on to fit right into my stand.
With the help of a friend its almost done - just going thru the water test now.

Given the dimensions of the stand, i had to go for a "tall" sump.
i'll post more pics once the piping is done.

I was looking at Home Depot today with the substrate on the mind...Setting up 2 75 gallon tanks.

On this note, what are the opinions of prefabbed stone tiles, I know the stone would be unreactive, but what about the glues and fiberglass mat that the stones are glued too? Any experiences out there (not trying to threadjack, but I want to know if there are any other alternatives to sand or gravel)....
