my girlfriend brought these home from work, wondering if they would be ok to put in my tank?

yep. I've got 450 lbs waiting for my new tank.
as long as you're sure there's no pesticides or weedkiller type stuff on it. if you aren't sure, scrub well and rinse better.

actually, after a closer look at the photo... is that glue on the back there? if so I'd avoid it unless you can get the glue off.

That looks like a slate tile that would get from a home improvement store. I am pretty sure I have heard of people using those.

Essentialy cut rock, ur good just rinse well or boil before use as mentioned ^^! it may raise ph just a tad (.1-/+) depending on how much u use but dw would easily counteract that imo. Just look out for waste underneath, lift em up once in awhile to stir (1-3x per month)

Also they will scratch the **** out of glass and acrylic so be careful!

no that isnt glue on the back, that was the first thing i looked at. it was a broken piece in a box she opened.

It will be fine, typical slate tile found at stores like Home Depot. Just make sure and clean it as well as break off any loose pieces.

It's the same stuff I used to anchor down my Pleco's house as well as a plant or 2.

i have it in an empty tank to see if anything leeches out, i doubt it though.

Looks like glue to me. Probably liquid nails residue. I think I spot a little yellow in the pic.

Hard to get the glue off. Just break that piece off, easier to boil when the pieces are smaller.

I've used slate plenty of times with no ill-effects. My piranha tank always had a cave built out of slate (the mis-shapen pieces for patios) and a couple pieces propped against the glass to trick my favorite one into hiding where I could see him. Never once had a problem... I'd give it a quick scrape to smooth anything too sharp or jagged, (you never know when fish will spaz out and they'll crash into decor) and a good rinse and you'll be set.
